Plot summary
The account begins in Los Angeles at the University of California, where early Internet work took place, and takes in the earliest network hardware. It then weighs the network's effects on society, for good and for ill. One chapter follows a family that has been harassed online since images of their daughter's corpse were leaked. Near the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, where wireless transmissions are barred, residents who call themselves sensitive to electromagnetism say the area eased their symptoms. An entrepreneur's ambition to send humans to Mars is examined, and the discussion moves to artificial intelligence and to robots as possible substitutes for human contact.
