Plot summary
The summer before the youth symphony auditions, Emily Lindstrom practices her violin while her friends are at camp. Neighborhood children bring her their secrets and fifty cents for advice at a booth she sets up in her backyard. Emily keeps one secret of her own: she is adopted and has not told her friends. Her parents had been unable to have a child of their own and are now expecting a baby, and their excitement leaves Emily feeling jealous. Philip, twelve, moves in next door and, caught hiding a broken chess piece in the garden, becomes one of her paying clients. He watches her play the violin and takes an interest in her, and his older brother David comes home early from tennis camp.

- Evan Rachel Wood did not know how to play the violin, so she spent two months before filming learning to mime playing the instrument along to the music; she described her own playing on set as sounding like 'fingernails on a chalkboard'.
- According to Heartland Film Festival president Jeff Sparks, its premiere there under the title Secret Keeper sold a record number of tickets and made it the most popular film in the festival's history.
- For the neighborhood scenes, director Blair Treu returned to the same location he had used for Wish Upon a Star, choosing it for its newly built houses surrounded by old-growth trees and its big houses with high ceilings, which he found ideal for filming.
