Plot summary
A New Wave fashion show fills a Manhattan nightclub, where the models include Margaret and her nemesis Jimmy, both heavy cocaine users. Adrian, Margaret's girlfriend, sells the drugs, and Jimmy keeps pressing her for more because he has no money. A small flying saucer sets down on the roof of the penthouse Margaret and Adrian share. From the Empire State Building, the German scientist Johann Hoffman watches the craft. When the observation deck closes for the night, he seeks out Owen, a college drama teacher he knows in the city, and shows him a photograph of the creature, which resembles a retina. Johann later wanders into the building where Sylvia lives; she is Jimmy's mother and invites him to stay for dinner. Across town, Katherine argues with her boyfriend Paul about his heroin use.

- Slava Tsukerman could not fund his earlier script, "Sweet Sixteen," so he and his wife Nina V. Kerova merged her scripts about a woman who could not orgasm with his idea for a film about aliens from outer space.
- Composer Clive Smith never saw a visual from the film while writing its music; he did not see his work integrated with the images until the premiere and worked solely from what director Slava Tsukerman described to him.
- Tsukerman and his wife, Nina V. Kerova, brought in their friend Anne Carlisle to help write the script because of language barriers and American speech, and the title "Liquid Sky" was born after the three writers collaborated over dinner one night.
- Liquid Sky was shot without permits, without major actors and without large funding, in several downtown New York City locations.
