Plot summary
The refugees on a fictional Scottish island share a sparsely furnished house while their asylum claims are decided. Omar, a Syrian musician, cannot work while his claim is decided; he carries his grandfather's oud everywhere and uses the only pay phone to call his parents in Istanbul, who also worry about his brother Nabil, a soldier in the civil war. Farhad, an Afghan who has waited thirty-two months, idolizes Freddie Mercury and brings home a chicken he names Freddie Jr. Seventeen-year-old Abedi from Ghana and Wasef from Nigeria, who dreams of a place at Chelsea, also live there. Helga and Boris run the cultural awareness classes the men attend. They watch episodes of Friends and debate them, and wonder if the island's remoteness is meant to break them.
