Plot summary
Lucien is eleven and lives in a village in the Ardennes, where his mother, Cécile, raises him and his older brother. His father is in prison. The boy is secretive and keeps his distance from other people as much as from their questions. When his grandmother dies, the prison grants a release so that his father can attend the funeral. Lucien watches the man grieve in handcuffs while a large police deployment shields him from the fury of the villagers, and the sight wounds him. His family advises him not to, but Lucien decides that he will see his father again.
