Plot summary
Dan O'Grady comes home to North Dakota from Ireland with a pot of gold and a leprechaun he captured there. He buries the gold, then strips the leprechaun of his powers with a four-leaf clover and traps him in a crate. Ten years later, J.D. Redding owns the farmhouse and his teenage daughter Tory arrives for the summer. Nathan Murphy, his ten-year-old brother Alex and their friend Ozzie Jones are hired to paint the house. Ozzie hears a cry for help from the basement and knocks the clover off the crate, setting the leprechaun free. Ozzie and Alex chase a rainbow, find a bag of a hundred gold coins and hide it in an old well, and the leprechaun searches the farm for what belongs to him.

- Writer-director Mark Jones took the leprechaun from Lucky Charms commercials, making the character an antagonist instead of a mascot, and also drew on the film Critters, which had a small antagonist.
- For the scene where Warwick Davis chases Jennifer Aniston in a wheelchair, Aniston had to run in slow motion so that Davis could keep up with her, because he had trouble working the wheels.
- Jennifer Aniston was an unknown when she impressed director Mark Jones, who fought to have her cast in the film.
- Leprechaun shot at Valencia Studios, where Terminator 2: Judgment Day had just finished, and its violent scenes at Big Sky Ranch, where Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons were shot; Warwick Davis called it "a little blasphemous".
