Plot summary
David Carr is an unemployed worker in Liverpool and a member of the Communist Party. In the summer of 1936 he travels to Spain to join the republican fight against the nationalist coup, crosses the border in Catalonia, and by chance enlists in a POUM militia on the Aragon front. The militia is commanded by Vidal, and there men and women serve together, among them the enthusiastic Maite. David befriends other foreign volunteers, the French volunteer Bernard, the Irishman Coogan, and Coogan's girlfriend Blanca, who is also in the POUM. In a village the militia has liberated, the peasants debate whether to collectivize the land.
