Plot summary
Madame de La Pommeraye, a young widow, insists she has never been in love. She gives in to the persistent courtship of the Marquis des Arcis, a libertine, and for two years the two are happy. Then he begins to neglect her, and when she suggests their feeling has faded, he agrees at once. Wounded, she plans revenge. She knows of an unfortunate noblewoman whose illegitimate daughter, Mademoiselle de Joncquières, earns their keep by receiving men at a nightclub. Madame de La Pommeraye moves the pair into an apartment, has them dress in black as devout Catholics do and stroll in the park, and there presents them to the Marquis, who is at once taken with the girl.
