Plot summary
Ayse is nineteen and comes from the Turkish countryside. In rural Turkey she is married to Hasan, the son of Fatma, a housewife of about fifty who keeps the customs of her homeland. Fatma, Mustafa and their six children live in Vienna, and the family brings Ayse there. The wedding to Hasan is a charade: Ayse has been chosen as the kuma, the second wife, of Mustafa. Austrian law forbids polygamy, yet the household receives her warmly. The language and the culture around her are foreign, and she remains an outsider.
