Plot summary
Kubo is a twelve-year-old boy with only one eye who lives in early feudal Japan. He and his ill mother live in a mountain cave near a village, and he earns their living by making origami figures move with music from his shamisen, telling the tale of his missing father Hanzo, a samurai warrior. He can never finish that story, because his mother cannot recall how it ends. She warns him not to stay out after dark, when her sisters and his grandfather, the Moon King, will come for the eye he still has.

- Kubo and the Two Strings, set in ancient Japan, was criticized for whitewashing: its central voice cast was white, and George Takei and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, the only actors of Japanese descent, both played minor characters.
- For the giant skeleton, Laika created a 16 ft, 400 lb stop-motion puppet that the studio claims is the record holder for the largest stop-motion puppet, deciding against smaller parts that might not work on screen with the other puppets.
- The giant skeleton puppet was built in two parts which were then attached together by magnets, and Laika had to design a robot to manipulate it after an industrial robot bought on eBay would not work with their setup.
