Plot summary
The vacant post at a village factory goes to Mirek, an engineer, who is handed the job of designing equipment to cut the plant's polluting emissions. He throws himself into the work with an enthusiasm the other workers do not share. He falls in love with Kotě, whose father, the stoker Křížek, was once an engineer himself and worked out a system for cutting emissions, only to have the factory management turn it down. Mirek gets hold of Křížek's original project and finds it brilliant. His line manager, Šmíd, who blocked the earlier plan, stands in the way of any attempt to bring it back.
