Plot summary
Betina lives in a home for orphaned girls beside the Hardenborg estate, seventeen years after her mother Marta died giving birth to her in Karrild. Countess Sonja Hardenborg gave birth to a daughter, Maria, on the same day, and the baby Betina passed into the countess's care. Betina and Maria meet and become friends, and Maria asks Betina to visit Hardenborg and greet her parents, Sonja and Otto Hardenborg, and her brother, Count Flemming. In the woods of the estate, Betina's father, Frank Jensen, has taken up work, and when the two girls come to see him, Maria's resemblance to Betina's mother Marta startles him.
