Killing the Shepherd (2021) on Netflix

Plot summary

In a remote part of Africa, a woman chief sets out to lift her community out of absolute poverty by fighting the illegal wildlife poaching that has gone on for decades. Subsistence hunters and bush meat gangs have killed so many animals that the government declares the community's homeland depleted. The chief secures help from a safari operator and the two of them work to bring the area stability. Disease, unreliable food supplies and widespread alcoholism make health care and education difficult to sustain. Families sell daughters into child marriage just after puberty to feed themselves for a year. Land speculators from South Africa, criminal poaching gangs and people from her own community all work against her, along with some elements of the modern world.
