Plot summary
Elizabeth I travels forward from her own century to a Britain in decay, brought there by the occultist John Dee and his spirit guide Ariel. Around her she finds a group of aimless young nihilists: Amyl Nitrate, Bod, Crabs and Mad. Amyl Nitrate lectures other young women on history and recalls dancing ballet. Bod is an anarchist who rejects sex. In a café Crabs meets Kid, a young musician, and Mad tears up postcards. The brothers Sphinx and Angel take up with Viv, a former artist, and bring her to Max, an ex-soldier. The impresario Borgia Ginz signs Kid and his band after an audition, and has bought landmarks including Westminster Cathedral and Buckingham Palace to use as music venues.
