Plot summary
Through his uncle, General Raleigh, Second Lieutenant Raleigh asks to be posted to the front in Northern France under Captain Stanhope of C Company, an officer a few years above him at school who had holidayed with Raleigh and Margaret, his sister. Stanhope, who won the Military Cross at Vimy Ridge, drinks heavily. The company's other officers include Lieutenant Osborne, an older man the others call Uncle, Trotter, and Hibbert, who complains of eye pain. Raleigh learns his duties, inspecting the trenches and supervising the morning stand to. The battalion commander learns from a deserter that a German assault is planned for 21 March 1918, and orders a raid across no man's land in daylight to bring back prisoners.
