Plot summary
Martin Brody, once Amity Island's police chief, has died of a heart attack, and his widow Ellen lives in the resort town, close to her younger son Sean, a deputy. Days before Christmas, Sean is sent to clear a log from a buoy, and a great white shark kills him. Ellen's other son, Michael, comes from the Bahamas for the funeral with Carla, his wife, and Thea, their five-year-old daughter. A marine biologist there, Michael has just won his first grant and refuses his mother's demand that he give up the work. Thea persuades Ellen to fly back with them, and Hoagie Newcombe, their small plane's pilot, takes an interest in her. Michael's colleague Jake McCay and Jake's wife Louisa spend the holidays nearby. Michael and his crew meet the shark, which has followed the family from Amity.

- The production was rushed: the first draft was completed in mid-December and the final draft of the screenplay was dated January 23, 1987, just nine days before filming began in Edgartown.
- Re-shooting the ending prevented Michael Caine from collecting his Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Hannah and Her Sisters in person.

American audiences disapproved of the original ending, Sid Sheinberg saying the shark and Jake dying "was too much for the audience in one finale"; new footage was shot to portray Jake's survival, with miniatures that saw the shark inexplicably explode after being speared by the boat.- Seven shark rigs were built: two fully articulated, two for jumping, one for ramming, one half shark and one fin. The articulated pair each had 22 sectioned ribs and movable jaws under a flexible latex skin, measured 25 ft, weighed 2500 lb and had teeth half a foot long.
- In earlier drafts of the screenplay the shark is directed by a voodoo curse laid by Papa Jacques, a Haitian witch-doctor; Searls told the Poughkeepsie Journal that in the book he does not contend the shark is thinking at all, which is why he has the voodoo guy standing in for him.
