Plot summary
Jane Osgood lives in Cape Anne, Maine, where she runs a lobster business and raises two children on her own. A mistake by the E&P railroad kills a shipment of 300 lobsters, and her customer cancels all future orders. Jane asks her lawyer and lifelong friend, George Denham, to seek payment from the railroad. In New York, Harry Foster Malone, the line's director, learns of the claim. The spoiled shipment results from his own budget cuts. Malone sends two employees, Crawford Sloan and Selwyn Harris, to Cape Anne with an offer of $700. Jane turns it down, saying the sum does not cover her lost business or the harm to her reputation.
