Philip Coolidge
Biography
Philip Coolidge was an American actor of stage, film and television who built a long career largely in supporting roles. Born in Concord, Massachusetts, in 1908, he started out in radio as an announcer for a Boston station before turning to the stage, making his debut in 1930 with the Peabody Repertory Company in Romeo and Juliet. He acted in Boston and Chicago and with touring companies, and by 1938 he was in New York, playing Simon Stimson in the first Broadway staging of Our Town. Over the following decades he appeared in many Broadway plays, among them The Crucible, Kismet and a Hamlet directed by John Gielgud, and he also directed There Goes the Bride, a comedy, in Washington, D.C. in 1948. His films included Boomerang! (1947), North by Northwest (1959), It Happened to Jane (1959) and Inherit the Wind (1960). He also worked in television, on Gunsmoke and The Twilight Zone, and died in 1967.

In 1947, Coolidge made his screen debut in the 20th-Century Fox crime drama Boomerang, though he was not credited on screen. Dana Andrews and Jane Wyatt starred in the film.

By the late 1940s Coolidge was being hired to direct major productions. In 1948 he directed There Goes the Bride, a comedy that premiered May 10 at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., with Ilka Chase and Robert Alda starring.
