Plot summary
A filmmaker is led by a volcanologist on an expedition to active volcanoes in five countries: Vanuatu, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Iceland, and North Korea. They observe eruptions and lava flows at Mount Sinabung, Mount Merapi, Erta Ale, and Paektu Mountain. The volcanologist hopes that his work will reduce the destructive impact of volcanoes on the people who live near them. The filmmaker wants to understand what these volcanoes reveal about human origins and human nature. He finds them mysterious, violent, and rapturously beautiful. He also says that no volcano is without a connection to a belief system.
