Plot summary
Bass Reeves was a captive slave who escaped to freedom. He became a Deputy U.S. Marshal, and by the end of his career he was counted among the leading lawmen of the Old West. His law enforcement career lasted 32 years, through Reconstruction after the Civil War, and he brought more than 3,000 outlaws to justice. The account moves from the antebellum South into the Civil War and the hostile plains of Indian Territory, and the dangers the West held for a former slave.
