Plot summary

Paul Prior, a war photographer, comes home to the South Island town where he grew up after his father Jeff dies. His brother Andrew, a pious ostrich farmer, presses him to stay and help settle the family cottage and orchard. Paul finds the den his father kept in the equipment shed, stocked with books, wine and free-thinking philosophy, out of reach of his puritanical wife Iris. Paul takes an English post at his old high school and befriends Celia, sixteen, a misfit who writes and dreams of Spain. Her mother Jackie is the town's butcher and Paul's former girlfriend.
