Plot summary
The same house in suburban Chicago holds three stories, told decades apart. In 1952, Claire Donnelly, a widowed nurse, is pregnant by her brother-in-law, Kevin, and wants an abortion she can keep from her late husband's family. The procedure is illegal, and Claire searches for someone who will perform it. In 1974, Barbara Barrows, a mother of four who has gone back to college, learns she is pregnant again and considers what to do with support from her teenage daughter, Linda. In 1996, college student Christine Cullen, pregnant by a married professor, decides to end the pregnancy and makes an appointment at the clinic of Dr. Beth Thompson, where protesters gather.
