Plot summary
Hubert Minel is sixteen, lives with his divorced mother, Chantale, in suburban Montréal, and can barely be in the same room as her. He loves her, and their time together tends to end in shouting. His father, Richard, is hardly part of his life. For a school assignment about family, Hubert tells his teacher, Julie Cloutier, that his mother is dead. Once Julie learns the truth, she says he killed her, and Hubert writes an essay he calls I killed my mother. He wants the money his grandmother left him, which Chantale keeps in trust for him, so that he can move into a place of his own. He turns for support to his friend Antonin Rimbaud and to Julie.

- Xavier Dolan financed his directorial debut himself at first, then asked Téléfilm and SODEC for subsidies and both turned him down. SODEC had loved the project but rejected it as too commercial, and told him to submit it again to its indie department; in December 2008 it gave him a $400,000 subsidy.
- Dolan's debut won three awards from the Director's Fortnight program at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, which drew international press attention, and the film received a standing ovation after it was shown.
- Xavier Dolan wrote the screenplay for I Killed My Mother when he was 16 years old, and told the Canadian newspaper Le Soleil in an interview that the film was partly autobiographical.
- Telefilm announced the film as Canada's submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards, yet it got no nominations at the 30th Genie Awards and only the Claude Jutra Award for best directorial debut. Kevin Tierney, vice-chairman of cinema for the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, compared the overlook to "being sent to the kiddie table".
