Plot summary
Li Xuelian, a village woman, and her husband Qin Yuhe divorce on paper, because married couples in China may hold only one property. Qin then marries another woman, treats the divorce as real and denies that any agreement existed. He also accuses Li of sleeping with other men. Li takes her case to the local police, arguing that a divorce she never intended should be nullified so that she can divorce him properly. Puzzled because she is already divorced, the authorities pass her along. She carries her complaint from the local judiciary to the magistrate and up to the provincial offices.
