Plot summary
Big Papaya and Little Papaya are two Singaporean friends who grow up loving getai, the stage-and-song shows performed during the seventh lunar month. Little Papaya, an orphan, is terminally ill with cancer. After watching a getai performance, the two begin singing together as the Papaya Sisters. Auntie Ling, who once sang getai herself, takes the sisters to her twin sister, the Goddess of Getai, for blessings. The Goddess gives the sisters the voices of the legendary Pearl Sisters and a feather each, on the condition that they respect the spirits, getai and people, avoid vulgarities and keep away from men. As the Papaya Sisters rise, Big Papaya's mother banishes her from the house for performing, and the techno-singing Durian Sisters set out to sabotage them.
