Plot summary
A decayed corpse found in the desert is identified as Marylou Summers, a woman who had been at a circus nearby four weeks before. In Pioneertown, California, livestock and residents have died mysteriously, and the detective handling the case asks Father John, a Catholic priest, for help. Father John holds that werewolves come from demonic possession and is certain one is at work. An Australian drifter, Ted Smith, arrived around the time the killings began and took a job at the local bar, keeping a tape recorder in his hotel room for private recordings. The priest and the detective also question Marie Adams, who survived a werewolf attack years earlier in the town of Drago.

- Roger Nall, the original director of Howling VII, walked off the production after conflicts with Clive Turner, who took over; Nall wanted a small-town werewolf movie, but Turner wanted a character-driven story about the hillbilly community. Turner then reshot nearly 50% of the film in three days.
- The shoot was a disaster over the werewolf's look: Clive Turner wanted it to resemble Steve Johnson's design from The Original Nightmare, while Roger Nall wanted something completely different. FX head Jerry Macaluso's team compromised, pleasing neither, then built its own creature echoing Rob Bottin's werewolves.
- It is the only Howling film never to get a DVD release in the United States, having come out there only on VHS and Laserdisc.
- Turner shot in Pioneertown as a tribute to the town he called one of his favorite places, and all of the townsfolk act in the film, using their own names for their characters.
- It was the first Howling sequel since Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf to make an attempt at continuity with the other films in the series.
- Clive Turner's original plan was to make the seventh Howling mostly out of footage from the other films for very little money, but he decided against it; even so, footage from the other movies still appears in the film to a limited extent.
