Plot summary
Vitka Chesnokov, 27, known as Chesnok, grew up in a children's home and works at a waste recycling plant in a provincial town. He feels stuck: a wife he does not love, an overbearing mother-in-law, a small son, and Lariska, the young lover he wants to be with. His estranged father, Lyokha Shtyr, a hardened criminal, then returns, paralyzed and unable to speak. A social worker wants Vitka to give up any claim to Lyokha's apartment, so Vitka plans to take his father to a home for the disabled, far away.
