Plot summary
Oregon became the first state to permit physician-assisted suicide when it legalized the practice in 1994; only Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands had done so before. The Supreme Court upheld the state's law in the 2006 case Gonzales v. Oregon. Opponents call the practice assisted suicide, while supporters prefer medical aid in dying. The documentary follows the people closest to it: patients with terminal illnesses and their doctors, friends and families. For close to a year, Cody Curtis, 54, a faculty member at OHSU who has liver cancer, weighed whether to end her life with barbiturates prescribed by a physician. The documentary also covers Washington State's passage of an assisted suicide law.
