Plot summary
Philip Winthrop comes to the House of Usher, a mansion ringed by a swamp, to see his fiancée, Madeline. Her brother Roderick opposes the match. He tells Philip that the Usher family carries a cursed bloodline that drove their ancestors to madness and left the mansion and the countryside around it desolate. Roderick's senses have grown painfully acute, and Madeline has fallen into a catatonic state. Foreseeing the family's evils passed to another generation, he discourages the marriage, and Philip grows desperate to take Madeline away.
