Plot summary
Ruth Matthews's husband, an archaeologist, dies in a fall at a dig. She moves her children back to the family house in a quiet suburb, hoping to leave the past behind. Her son Michael adapts to the loss, but young Sally is traumatized and begins behaving oddly, building an elaborate tower out of playing cards and photographs. When Sally's condition worsens, a court orders Ruth to bring her to Jake Beerlander, an expert in child autism.
