Plot summary
Jerry Goldsmith, Bill Hudley, Mary Knowles and Denise Willis are two couples on the road, collecting offbeat roadside attractions for a book. At a gas station and museum of curiosities, the owner, Captain Spaulding, tells them the local legend of Dr. Satan, a doctor hanged from a tree. The four go looking for it and pick up Baby, a hitchhiker who says her family lives a few miles away. A hidden figure shoots out one of their tires, and Baby takes Bill to her house to arrange a tow. Her half-brother Rufus brings the rest of the group to the Firefly home, where they meet Baby's relatives, Otis, the giant Tiny, Mother Firefly and Grandpa Hugo.

- Director Rob Zombie admitted he knowingly shot a weak ending because he was out of budget, gambling that the studio would pay for a bigger reshoot once they saw how the film's climax fell flat, and that plan worked.
- Jake McKinnon could not see well when dressed as The Professor and almost hit actress Erin Daniels with a real ax during the film's climax; Zombie later said he had simply hoped Daniels would move out of the way in time.
- The names of the Firefly family members are all borrowed from Groucho Marx characters: Captain Spaulding from Animal Crackers, Otis B. Driftwood from A Night at the Opera, Rufus T. Firefly from Duck Soup, and Hugo Z. Hackenbush from A Day at the Races.
- Rob Zombie feared that a meeting with Stacey Snider, the head of Universal, meant the studio would demand a re-shoot; he later learned that Snider's fears of the film receiving an NC-17 rating had led the company to refuse to release it.
- Zombie made a deal with MGM, which slated the film for an October 2002 release, but MGM later refused to release it following a controversial remark from Zombie claiming that the company had no morals for releasing the film.
- Dennis Fimple, who was selected to play Grampa Hugo Firefly, died following filming, and the finished product was dedicated to his memory.
- Zombie's manager got both Lionel Richie and rapper Trina to appear on a cover of the song with Zombie, released under the title "Brick House 2003".
