Plot summary
Horus lives in a northern land of the Iron Age, where he drives off a pack of silver wolves and wakes an ancient stone giant. From the giant's shoulder he pulls a rusty sword, the Sword of the Sun, and the giant promises to come to him once it has been reforged. His dying father tells him the family came from a seaside village destroyed by the ice demon Grunwald and urges him to return there. With his bear companion, Horus sets out. Grunwald confronts him on the way and throws him from a cliff when the boy refuses to serve him; villagers rescue him, and he wins their regard by killing an enormous pike that threatened their fishing. Grunwald then sends his wolves against the village.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film was adapted from Kazuo Fukazawa's puppet play The Sun Above Chikisani, itself a reinterpretation of an epic in the Yukar oral tradition of the Ainu people of Hokkaido, and its setting was moved to Scandinavia to avoid controversy over depicting the Ainu.
- Director Isao Takahata and animation director Yasuo Ōtsuka ran production in an egalitarian way, inviting input from the whole team at storyboard and planning meetings, which opened the door for Hayao Miyazaki to contribute significantly to the story and animation.
- With a production budget of over ¥100 million, Horus was the most expensive anime film ever made until Space Battleship Yamato surpassed it in 1977.
