Plot summary
Hirosuke Hitomi cannot remember much of his life before the asylum where he is kept, even though he is not insane. He gets out and is blamed for the killing of a circus girl. In a newspaper he finds a photograph of Genzaburo Komoda, a man who has just died and who is his double. Pretending to be the dead man brought back to life, Hirosuke steps into the Komoda household, where the widow and the mistress take him for Genzaburo. Memories return to him there, pointing to a nearby island, home of Jogoro, Genzaburo's father, whose fingers are webbed, and Hirosuke sets out to reach it.
