Plot summary
Four young African American Sunni Muslims set out to steal guns for self-defense and end up cornered in Brooklyn after a gun battle with police, holding a dozen hostages inside a sporting goods store. The standoff runs from January 19 to January 21, 1973, and becomes the longest hostage siege in the history of the New York Police Department. For 130 years the department's answer to such scenes has been an ultimatum followed by deadly force, the same aggressive approach used by American police at the time. Police psychologist Harvey Schlossberg presses his superiors to negotiate with the men instead. Archival film of the siege and interviews with survivors make up the account.
