Plot summary
Across eighteen months, a crew records three crack cocaine users in Lowell, Massachusetts, a mill city twenty miles northwest of Boston. They are Dicky Eklund, Brenda and Gary "Boo-Boo" Giuffrida. The textile mills relocated to the South, and the computer company that briefly revived the city has since closed, leaving much of the population out of work. Dicky, who once fought Sugar Ray Leonard in 1978, is after a boxing comeback and tries to keep his habit, and the crimes it drives, from wrecking his life for his young son. Brenda, a prostitute, is pregnant and weighs an abortion, saying the father could be Mike, her on-off boyfriend, or Boo Boo, whom she accuses of pimping her.
