Plot summary
Kaz Une brings Guy Gabaldon into his family's home in 1930s Los Angeles after learning that Guy's father is dead and his mother is in a hospital. The Une parents speak little English, so Guy learns Japanese, and the family adopts him when his mother dies. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Unes are sent to the Manzanar internment camp. Guy fails his draft physical. Visiting the family, he learns that George and Kaz have joined the Army, and he signs up for the Marines because he speaks Japanese.

- Guy Gabaldon, the real Marine hero the film is about, boosted its commercial performance with a series of personal appearances; he was happy with Jeffrey Hunter's portrayal of him but suggested the veteran might have played the role better himself.
- Director Phil Karlson called Hell to Eternity one of the most important pictures he might ever make because it told the true story of the Nisei in America, but said Allied Artists saw it only as a war story you could make for a price and had no idea what he was doing.
