Plot summary
A hospital stay brings a distressing diagnosis: motor neurone disease, and doctors expect Stephen Hawking to live only two more years. He returns to Cambridge after the new term has begun without him, and with no subject for his PhD, work offers him no escape. His supervisor, Dennis Sciama, offers help that he refuses, and he sinks into depression while his colleagues get on with their work and college life. The friendship of Jane Wilde, whom he sees from time to time, and her confidence in him are what keep him going. Cosmology at the time is dominated by Steady State, the theory that the universe has no beginning, championed by Professor Fred Hoyle.
