Plot summary
In Longview, Texas, the contest takes place once a year, and twenty-four contestants enter the 1995 running. Each of them puts one hand on a pickup truck and leaves it there. The truck goes to whoever manages to stay longest, and the rules forbid leaning on the vehicle or squatting; either move puts a contestant out of the running. The only respite comes on a fixed schedule, five minutes in every hour and fifteen minutes in every six. The contest goes on for seventy-seven continuous hours, and a documentary follows the 1995 competition and the people in it as the time passes.
