In the 1930s, Changchun is the capital of Manchukuo, the puppet state that Japanese forces run in China's northeast. Xiao Dongbei, a thief, robs a priest in the cathedral and claims to belong to the underground revolution; police catch him as he runs. He serves two days and shares a cell with a captured rebel, who gives him his clothes. At home his old father, a Boxer Rebellion veteran, struggles with the rent. Cutting open a shoe, he finds a message about a gold shipment bound for the central bank.
