Plot summary
An artist grieves for his wife and has not accepted her loss. He paints the squalor of the sewer, and he goes back to the river he remembers from childhood, which that sewer has become, looking for inspiration. There, beside a drainage pipe, a trapped mermaid covered with lumpy carcinomata and grotesque boils pleads with him telepathically for help. He brings her home to attend to her grave condition.
