Plot summary
Coy Mathis is a six-year-old transgender girl in Fountain, Colorado. She came out as transgender in kindergarten and used the girls' bathroom at her elementary school. When she reached first grade, the principal told her parents, Jeremy and Kathryn, that their daughter could use only the boys' bathroom or the nurse's bathroom from then on. The family did not comply. Jeremy and Kathryn removed their five children from the school and turned to the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund, which helped them bring a complaint to the Colorado Civil Rights Division. While the family waited for a decision, they went public with their case, and Coy's story drew attention from news outlets around the world.
