Plot summary
Weeks after the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Army Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller and his platoon search for the weapons of mass destruction that justified the war. The sites he is sent to are dead ends, and when he tells his superiors the intelligence is anonymous and inaccurate, they dismiss his concerns. CIA officer Martin Brown tells him there are no weapons and that the claims are a deception. Defense Department official Clark Poundstone brushes off Wall Street Journal reporter Lawrie Dayne, who wants to speak with her source, an Iraqi code-named Magellan. An Iraqi who calls himself Freddy tells Miller he saw Ba'ath Party figures meeting in a nearby house in Baghdad.

- Roy Miller, the officer played by Matt Damon, was loosely based on Richard Gonzales, who worked on the film as a military adviser for two years on condition that it stayed faithful to the experience of American soldiers in Iraq, and who thought the political row over the film was overblown.
- Paul Greengrass set out to make a film about the Iraq war rather than any particular story, having supported Tony Blair's case for it at first and grown disillusioned. He read Bob Woodward, Seymour Hersh, James Risen, Thomas Ricks and Ron Suskind, and compiled his own document titled How Did We Get It So Wrong?
