Plot summary
Brother Lorenzo Casamares commissions a portrait from Francisco Goya, the court painter to Spain's royalty, whose work disturbs the Spanish Inquisition. Lorenzo is granted power to intensify the Inquisition, and while he sits for Goya he notices a canvas of the painter's model, Inés, the daughter of the wealthy merchant Tomás Bilbatúa. The Inquisition summons Inés and accuses her of Judaizing because she refuses pork. She is imprisoned, and Tomás appeals to Goya, who asks Lorenzo to find out what has happened to her. Tomás gives the Church a donation in gold, hoping it will persuade the Holy Office to release her.

- Actual Goya paintings were used in the film, except for the ones that were supposed to resemble Javier Bardem and Natalie Portman. The close-ups of Goya's hands creating his paintings were performed by a real artist.
- Stellan Skarsgård wore a fat suit at first, but he enjoyed the food so much that he later gained enough weight for the role for real.
- Director Miloš Forman was getting ready to cast Inés when he saw Natalie Portman on a magazine cover and noticed how much she looked like The Milkmaid of Bordeaux.
