Plot summary
Neil Klugman is an army veteran and a Rutgers graduate who works as a library clerk and shares a home with relatives in the Bronx. At the swimming pool of Old Oaks Country Club in Purchase, New York, where his cousin Doris brings him as a guest, he meets Brenda Patimkin, a Radcliffe student whose father owns a successful plumbing supply business. Neil calls and asks her on a date; she agrees without remembering him. Her mother and the rest of her family object to the match because of differences in class and background.

- Michael Meyers had his only acting role in Goodbye, Columbus, playing Ron, the brother of Ali MacGraw's character; director Larry Peerce discovered him at a wedding at Manhattan's Plaza Hotel. He later became a physician and wrote a memoir, Goodbye Columbus, Hello Medicine.
- Goodbye, Columbus was essentially Ali MacGraw's film debut; her only earlier screen work was a bit part in A Lovely Way to Die the previous year.
