Plot summary

Nikki Giovanni, the American poet, is the subject of a portrait that moves between her own recollections and the record of the times she has seen. Her life and her career unfold across decades of American history: the civil rights years, the Black Arts Movement, and the later years of Black Lives Matter. Intimate vérité scenes, archival footage and visual treatments of her poems make up the account, and her reflections on the life she has led and the legacy she leaves run through it. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received the Grand Jury Prize for U.S. Documentary Competition.
