Plot summary
Francis is thirty and comes from Guinea-Bissau. He is the only person from a boat that crossed the Mediterranean illegally from West Africa to come ashore alive, and he wakes on a southern European beach set on a regular, decent life. In Berlin he is stateless and holds no work permit, and is treated just as harshly there. He turns down an offer to sell drugs in Hasenheide park, then falls in with Reinhold, a dealer and trafficker who takes him in. Francis meets Eva, who owns a club, and, after a string of dramatic experiences, the escort Mieze, the narrator of the story.
