Plot summary
Teenage girls from across Missouri attend Girls State, a week-long program in which they form a government from the ground up. Emily Worthmore, a conservative Christian, campaigns for Federalist Party governor and wants the gathering taken as seriously as the boys' program, with more focus on partisan issues. Nisha Murali, an Indian American, pushes herself to be more social, aims for a seat on the state Supreme Court and speaks often about abortion rights. Tochi Ihekona, the daughter of Nigerian immigrants, runs for Nationalist Party state attorney general and wants to give the court sound legal counsel. Faith Glasgow and Cecilia Barton also run for governor. Brooke Taylor seeks a court seat alongside Nisha, and Maddie Rowan, Emily's friend, is a vocal member of the queer community.
