Plot summary
In May 2008, a letter from Cabot Oil & Gas offers a man in Milanville, Pennsylvania, nearly $100,000 to lease his family's land for natural gas drilling. He sets out to see how the boom affects communities elsewhere, starting in Dimock Township, Pennsylvania, then in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Texas. Residents describe wells and surface water contaminated with methane and toxic chemicals, chronic health problems, and tap water that can catch fire. He is concerned by plans to drill in the Marcellus Formation where it overlaps the New York City water supply and the Delaware River Basin.

- Energy in Depth, launched by the Independent Petroleum Association of America, listed what it called factual inaccuracies in Gasland and produced a rebuttal film, TruthLand; the Gasland makers answered with their own rebuttal.
- Josh Fox made the film over about 18 months, often working alone as his own camera operator, and editor Matthew Sanchez came up with its structure, cutting roughly 200 hours of footage down to about 100 minutes.
