Plot summary

A helicopter of geologists bound for Shizuoka Prefecture is cut in two by a supersonic ray from a cave. Eruptions across Japan disrupt shipping and air travel, and a blast at Mount Fuji brings the giant turtle Gamera in front of a boy, Eiichi. Reporter Okabe reaches a village on the route of the planned Chuo Expressway, where residents refuse to leave and foreman Shiro Tsutsumi of the road crew is turned back. Okabe follows Eiichi into the woods toward a cave where Gamera might be; a winged creature attacks, Gamera drives it off but takes a wound from its ray. Eiichi names the monster Gyaos, and Dr. Aoki concludes the eruptions woke it, that a forked tongue produces its ray, and that two spines keep its head from turning.

The miniature Hotel Hi-land in the film was based on the Hotel New Otani Tokyo, which annoyed the hotel's president so much that he told Daiei president Masaichi Nagata, "we're barely open yet Gamera has already broken it."
Gyaos was created in response to Toho's Frankenstein Conquers the World and The War of the Gargantuas, and director Noriaki Yuasa pitched writer Niisan Takahashi the idea of turning Dracula into a kaiju.
The full-scale Gyaos claw prop was operated by three crew members, who had to pull on a cable attached to it.
The film's opening was inspired by real volcanic eruptions happening in the Philippines, Indonesia and Kamchatka during production, amid fears that Mount Fuji would become active.
The film's expressway protest was inspired by the Sanrizuka opposition against construction of the New Tokyo International Airport.
As a publicity stunt, a press conference was held with Gyaos promoting its involvement in the film, but the stunt angered the reporters who had been called to the conference.
Gamera vs. Gyaos was one of the few films shown twice on Mystery Science Theater 3000 as Gamera vs. Gaos, first in the initial KTMA series (episode 6) and again in Season 3 (episode 8).
