Trailer

Plot summary

In 1973, the town of Shima is attacked by the Original Gyaos, bird-like creatures that eat people. A benevolent fire-breathing turtle creature, Avant Gamera, holds them off so the residents can evacuate, and Kosuke Aizawa watches from the shore as Gamera ends his own life to stop them. Thirty-three years later Kosuke has a son, Toru, who dreads being left alone: his mother Miyuki has died and his father works hard to support the family. Toru's neighbor Mai Nishio is due for heart surgery, and his friends Katsuya Ishida and Ishimaru Ishida take him out exploring. Where Gamera died, Toru finds an unusual egg resting on a red stone. It hatches into a young Gamera he calls Toto, which grows fast, can float in the air, shows high intelligence and breathes small bursts of fire.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Gamera the Brave (2005)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Online hoax photos of a giant ancient tortoise on a flatbed truck, said to have been caught in or around the Amazon River, were actually of a full-scale, 15-foot-long prop of Toto built for Gamera the Brave.
  • In 2002 Kadokawa president Kazuo Kuroi announced plans for a Godzilla vs. Gamera film and a Daimajin reboot, but Toho turned both down, which led to Gamera the Brave being produced instead.
  • Numerous later Gamera productions were cancelled, including sequels, anime projects by Cartoon Network and Yoshitomo Yonetani, Yoshimitsu Banno's Gamera 3D and several 2010s reboot attempts, with 17 years passing before the Netflix series Gamera Rebirth in 2023.
  • Casting for Gamera the Brave deliberately avoided staff who had worked with Shusuke Kaneko and Shinji Higuchi on the Heisei trilogy and was done without informing them; producer Naoki Sato of Nikkatsu later asked Kaneko to stay out of the production.
  • Stakeholders wanted a sequel, prequel or side story to the Heisei Gamera trilogy, but the executives insisted on breaking from it; Yoichi Arishige said he would not take part if Gamera the Brave became a sequel.
  • The script was redeveloped from an unused Gamera: Guardian of the Universe script by Chiaki and Kazuya Konaka, and the same "Konaka Gamera" script also shaped early plots of Tsuburaya's Ultraman Tiga and Toei Animation's Digimon Tamers.
  • The monster Zedus was intentionally designed after kaiju from Toho and Tsuburaya Productions, among them Godzilla, TriStar Pictures' Godzilla, Jirahs, Varan and Gorosaurus.
